Mac fan making noise: when it's normal and when it's a problem
Hissing, buzzing, clicking or a fan taking off out of nowhere: how to tell normal airflow noise apart from a sign of dust, a worn part or a control error.

Barulhos normais
Sopro suave e constante: é o ar passando.
Trocar a ventoinha
No Terminal: sudo powermetrics --samplers smc -i 1000 -n 1, na linha Fan.
Every fan makes airflow noise. What matters is the kind of noise and when it shows up. A breeze that rises and falls with use is a sign everything works. A click, a scrape or a fan at maximum while the Mac is cool are signs that something needs attention.
Normal noises
A soft, steady breeze: that's air flowing. It rises during heavy tasks and drops when you stop.
A fan suddenly speeding up: macOS keeps the fan slow until the processor heats up and then speeds it up all at once. Annoying, but normal. A slightly higher minimum makes that change smoother (see the ideal speed).
The fan running right after an update: the system is reindexing and rebuilding caches. It passes within a few hours.
Noises that need attention
Noise
Likely cause
What to do
Loud fan all the time, even during light use
Dust in the heatsink or dried out thermal paste
Cleaning and new paste at a repair shop
A high pitched hiss or buzz that changes with speed
Worn fan bearing
Replace the fan
Scraping or ticking
A blade touching dirt, a cable or a loose sticker
Open and clean it; replace the fan if a blade is bent
Fan at maximum while the Mac is cool
Power controller (SMC) error or a faulty sensor
Reset the SMC; if it comes back, a repair shop
How to test at home
Quit all apps and wait 5 minutes.
Check the fan speed. In Terminal: sudo powermetrics --samplers smc -i 1000 -n 1, on the Fan line. Or in the menu bar, with Ventfreedom.
With the Mac idle and cool (below 55 °C), the fan should be close to its minimum. If it's high, the problem isn't the workload.
Now raise the minimum, for example to 3,000 RPM, and listen. A stronger, even breeze is a good sign. A hiss or scrape that grows with the speed points to the fan.
Reset the SMC
On Intel Macs, the SMC controls the fans. When it gets confused, the fan can stay at maximum for no reason. Resetting the SMC doesn't erase any files. The steps depend on the model; follow Apple's official guide: How to reset the SMC of your Mac.
Summary
A breeze that rises and falls with use is healthy. Mechanical noise is a part. A loud fan with a cool Mac is the controller. And constant heat during light use, with the fan low, is solved by removing heat earlier, with a slightly higher fan minimum.
Frequently asked questions
My Mac's fan took off and won't stop. What should I do?
First check Activity Monitor to see whether an app is using a lot of processor. If there's nothing and the fan stays at maximum while the Mac is cool, resetting the SMC usually fixes it.
Can a MacBook fan be replaced?
Yes, it's a part sold separately for most Intel models. Replacing it requires opening the Mac and is best done by a repair shop.
