Thermal throttling on the Mac: why it slows down when it gets hot
When the processor gets close to its temperature limit, the Mac lowers its own speed. Learn what thermal throttling is, how to confirm it and how to avoid it.

Ajude o ar a sair
Cuide do hardware
Divida a tarefa
Menos processos disputando o processador significa menos calor.
Importante: nenhum app deve impedir o throttling. Ele é a última proteção do processador. O caminho certo é tirar o calor antes, não desligar a proteção.
Perguntas frequentes
Thermal throttling estraga o Mac?
You're exporting a video, on a long call or with lots of tabs open, and the Mac keeps getting slower for no obvious reason. The cursor stutters, apps take longer. Very often the culprit is heat: the processor is slowing itself down on purpose. This is called thermal throttling.
What it is
Every processor has a maximum working temperature. On the Intel chips used in Macs, it's around 100 °C. When it gets close, the processor and macOS lower the frequency (the speed) to generate less heat. It's a protection, and it works: the Mac doesn't burn out. But performance drops, sometimes by half.
The signs
The Mac only gets slow after a few minutes of heavy work, not right at the start.
The fan is at its maximum, or close to it.
kernel_task shows up at the top of Activity Monitor, with heavy processor usage.
The keyboard and the top of the Mac feel hot to the touch.
How to confirm it
Open Terminal and type:
pmset -g therm
If CPU_Speed_Limit shows a number below 100, macOS is limiting the processor at that moment. For example, CPU_Speed_Limit = 60 means it can only use 60% of its speed. To see the temperature as well, check how to check your Mac's temperature.
How to avoid it
Remove heat before it builds up
Throttling happens when heat builds up faster than it leaves. With the fan at its factory minimum until the processor gets quite hot, the Mac starts heavy work already at a disadvantage. A higher minimum, like 2,500 RPM, gives some headroom before the peak. Ventfreedom keeps that minimum all the time, never lowering what macOS asks for.
Help the air get out
Use the Mac on a hard surface with the hinge clear. A stand that lifts the bottom helps a lot during long tasks.
Take care of the hardware
Dust in the heatsink and dried out thermal paste are the most common causes of throttling on Macs older than four or five years. A cleaning with new paste usually brings back a good part of the performance.
Split the work
For long exports and builds, quit the other apps. Fewer processes competing for the processor means less heat.
Important: no app should prevent throttling. It's the processor's last line of protection. The right approach is to remove heat earlier, not to turn the protection off.
Frequently asked questions
Does thermal throttling damage the Mac?
No. It's precisely the protection that prevents damage. The problem is performance: the Mac stays slower while it's hot.
Why does kernel_task use so much processor when the Mac gets hot?
It's one of the ways macOS cools down: kernel_task occupies the processor so other apps use less of it, and so it generates less heat. It's a consequence of the heat, not the cause.
