How to check your Mac's temperature (and which numbers are normal)
Three ways to see the processor temperature on an Intel Mac, from Terminal to the menu bar, plus a table to tell whether your Mac is cool, warm or too hot.

sudo powermetrics --samplers smc -i 1000 -n 1
Temperatura
O que significa
35 a 55 °C
Mac parado ou em uso leve. Ótimo.
55 a 75 °C
Uso normal: navegador com várias abas, vídeo, reunião.
75 a 90 °C
Carga pesada.
Assim a comparação é justa.
Perguntas frequentes
A temperatura do Mac varia tanto assim?
macOS doesn't show the processor temperature anywhere on screen. Even so, it's the best thermometer to know whether the Mac is doing fine, whether the fan is keeping up and whether a change (cleaning, a new fan minimum, a stand) made a difference.
1. Through Terminal, without installing anything
On Intel Macs, macOS itself includes a tool that reads the sensors:
sudo powermetrics --samplers smc -i 1000 -n 1
Enter your Mac's password (it doesn't show while you type) and look for the lines CPU die temperature and Fan. The first is the processor temperature; the second, the fan speed in RPM.
To follow it live, remove -n 1; it updates every second. To stop, press Control + C.
2. Check whether the Mac is already holding itself back
Also in Terminal, this command tells you whether the processor is being slowed down by heat:
pmset -g therm
If CPU_Speed_Limit shows a value below 100, the Mac is lowering the processor speed to cool down. Learn what that means in thermal throttling on the Mac.
3. With an app in the menu bar
The most practical way is to keep the temperature always in sight. Ventfreedom shows the processor temperature in its window, in orange from 75 °C and red from 90 °C, and the fan speed in the menu bar, updated every 2 seconds.
Which numbers are normal
Reference values for the Intel processors in Macs. Each model is a little different.
Temperature
What it means
35 to 55 °C
Mac idle or in light use. Great.
55 to 75 °C
Normal use: a browser with several tabs, video, a meeting.
75 to 90 °C
Heavy load. Acceptable for a while, but if it happens during light use, something is wrong.
Above 90 °C
Very hot. The processor is close to its limit (around 100 °C) and starts losing speed.
How to compare before and after
Quit heavy apps and wait 5 minutes with the Mac idle.
Write down the temperature with the Mac at rest.
Always do the same task for 10 minutes (for example, the same video in full screen) and write it down again.
Make the change (a new fan minimum, cleaning, a stand) and repeat the steps.
That way the comparison is fair. If the temperature during light use is high, see the 8 most common causes.
Frequently asked questions
Does macOS show the temperature anywhere?
Not in any visible way. Activity Monitor shows processor usage, but not the temperature. To see the number, you need Terminal or an app.
Does a Mac's temperature really change that much?
Yes, and quickly. The processor can go from 50 °C to 90 °C in a few seconds when you open a heavy app, and come back down soon after. Look at the trend over a few minutes, not at a single number.
