How to show up on Google Maps with Google Business Profile: step by step
E a melhor parte: é gratuito.
- o responsável precisa poder ser encontrado no endereço informado durante o horário de atendimento;
- o endereço deve ser real, com sinalização permanente com o nome da empresa. Caixa postal, escritório virtual sem funcionários e coworking sem atendimento no local não são aceitos;
- deve haver só um perfil para cada local;
- Abra o Google Maps.
A verificação
- telefone ou SMS, com um código;
- email;
- videochamada com um representante, em que você mostra o local e o negócio;
- quem atende apenas no local do cliente não deve mostrar o endereço ao público;
- a área de serviço deve ser definida pelas cidades ou regiões atendidas;
- verificar o perfil;
- manter endereço, horário, horários especiais, categoria e atributos sempre atualizados;
- adicionar fotos e vídeos reais;

When someone searches for "bakery near me" or "electrician in Contagem", Google usually shows a map with a few businesses before the websites. The businesses listed there have a Google Business Profile, formerly known as Google My Business.
And the best part: it's free. According to the official Google Business Profile Help, adding or claiming a profile has no cost. This step by step guide is based on that official help, so you can do it yourself.
Before you start: does your business qualify?
Google's guidelines for representing your business set some conditions. Check them before creating the profile:
- the person in charge must be reachable at the stated address during the stated hours;
- the address must be real, with permanent signage showing the business name. PO boxes, virtual offices without staff and coworking spaces with no customer service on site are not accepted;
- there should be only one profile for each location;
- the name must be the real business name, the same one used on the storefront and on your materials.
If you only work at the customer's place and don't receive anyone at your address, you can still have a profile. See the section on service areas below.
Step by step to create your profile
On a computer or a phone, with a Google account:
- Go to business.google.com/add.
- Type the business name. If it shows up in the list, a profile already exists: skip to the next section, on claiming.
- Choose the main category, the one that best describes the business, such as "Bakery" or "Electrician".
- State whether there's a location customers can visit. If so, fill in the address.
- If you also serve customers away from your address, enter the cities or neighborhoods in your service area.
- Add your phone number and your website address, if you have one.
- Choose a verification option and follow the instructions on screen.
The screens change from time to time, but the path is this: basic details, address or area, contact and verification.
If your business is already on Maps: claim it
Sometimes Google already has a profile for your business, created from public information. In that case, you claim it:
- Open Google Maps.
- Search for the business name and city.
- Select the profile, then Claim this business and Manage now. In the phone app, the option is under the About tab.
- Choose a verification option and follow the instructions.
If the profile was already verified by someone else, such as a former employee or the agency that used to manage it, you need to request ownership from the current owner, through a separate procedure described in Google's help.
Verification
Verification confirms to Google that you represent the business. The available methods are chosen by Google based on the type of business and the region. The official help lists, among others:
- phone or text message, with a code;
- email;
- a video call with a representative, where you show the location and the business;
- a postcard sent by mail with a five digit code, which usually arrives within 14 days.
After verification, the information may go through a review that takes up to 5 business days, according to the same help page. Sometimes Google asks for more than one method.
Do you work at the customer's place? Set up a service area
Plumbers, electricians, cleaners, technicians and other professionals who go to the customer are called service area businesses by Google. The guidelines say that:
- businesses that only serve customers at the customer's location should not show their address to the public;
- the service area should be defined by the cities or regions you serve;
- in general, the area shouldn't extend beyond two hours away from where the business is located.
Businesses that receive customers at their address and also go to them can show the address and set a service area at the same time.
How to improve your position on the map
The official help explains that local ranking depends on three factors:
- Relevance: how well the profile matches what the person searched for. A complete profile helps.
- Distance: how close the business is to the person searching or to the location searched.
- Prominence: how well known the business is, which includes links from other websites and the number and quality of reviews.
The same page states that you can't pay to improve your local ranking. According to Google, these things help:
- verifying the profile;
- keeping your address, hours, special hours, category and attributes up to date;
- adding real photos and videos;
- replying to reviews, both positive and negative.
Having your own website also counts: it can be linked to the profile and it's one of the places other websites link to. See how the two relate in website or Instagram.
Reviews: how to ask the right way
The profile itself creates a link and a QR code you can send to customers. Send it after a finished job, on WhatsApp or printed at the counter.
Note: Google's help prohibits offering incentives in exchange for reviews, such as discounts, gifts or free services, and also in exchange for removing negative reviews. This is treated as fake engagement.
Mistakes that hurt your profile
- Adding keywords to the name, such as "John's Garage Cheap Mechanic Contagem". The guidelines ask for the real name only.
- Using a virtual office address or a PO box.
- Creating more than one profile for the same location.
- Leaving holiday hours out of date.
- A phone number, address or name that differs from what's on your website and social media.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a website to create a profile?
No. The profile works without a website. But a website complements it: it gives you room to explain your services, show your work and answer questions. See what it needs in a website for a small business.
How long does it take to show up?
It depends on the verification method and on Google's review. With a postcard, delivery alone can take up to 14 days. After that, the review can take up to 5 business days.
Can I pay to be first on the map?
Not in the free local ranking. Google states that you can't pay to improve it. There are ads, which are labeled as sponsored, but those are something else.
